Cambodia’s leaders are murderous kleptocrats: author

STEPHEN LONG: Cambodia is one of the world’s poorest nations. At least 30 per cent of the population live on less than a dollar a day.

The Australian Government gives over $64 million in aid to Cambodia every year – the world, more than a billion. But how much of that actually gets to the Cambodian people?

Joel Brinkley is the author of a new book called Cambodia’s Curse. He says Cambodia’s leaders are murderous kleptocrats who pocket most foreign aid, while selling the nation’s rice crop for the own gain, and leaving their people to starve, as the world turns a blind eye.

ARTICLE 19 welcomes adoption of FoI law in Mongolia

 

ARTICLE 19 welcomes the adoption of the Law on Information Transparency and Freedom of Information by the Parliament of Mongolia on June 16, 2011. The Law will come into effect on December 1, 2011.

“We are very pleased that Mongolia has now joined the nearly 90 countries across the world that provide legal protection for the right to information. The adoption of the Law on Information Transparency and Freedom of Information is an important milestone for enhancing public participation and government transparency in Mongolia,” said Agnes Callamard, Executive Director ARTICLE 19.

“We call upon the government and civil society of Mongolia to work together and allocate the necessary resources to ensure the effective implementation of the Freedom of Information Law,” continued Callamard. (more…)
